What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care is a philosophy of care for people of all ages who have a life-limiting illness with no prospect of cure. The Palliative approach aims to improve the quality of a person’s life while recognising the needs of family & friends. Through our holistic approach, we aim to address the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
At Sandalwood we care and support people with cancer including leukaemia. We also care for people with other, non-malignant terminal illnesses, including motor-neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, end-stage respiratory, heart and kidney disease, end stage Parkinson’s disease or dementia.
Can I still have active treatment for my illness?
Yes - the focus of care is maintaining quality of life and meeting the needs of the person, their family and carers by providing much needed choice concerning the location/ setting in which they receive care.
The patient is an important partner in the planning of their care and managing their condition. Family and carers also have an important role in this area. When people are well informed, participate in treatment decisions and share open communication with their palliative care team, care can be as effective as possible.
