Dr Rhys Filgate is a Specialist General Surgeon with interest in bowel surgery and offers a comprehensive colorectal and general surgical service. His main focus is in minimally invasive colorectal surgery for both cancer and inflammatory bowel disease and also in recurrent or advanced pelvic cancer.

Dr Rhys Filgate is a Specialist General Surgeon with interest in bowel surgery and offers a comprehensive colorectal and general surgical service. His main focus is in minimally invasive colorectal surgery for both cancer and inflammatory bowel disease and also in recurrent or advanced pelvic cancer. He works closely with the multidisciplinary teams at both Sir Charles Gairdner and Hollywood Private Hospitals to ensure cancer patients receive optimum care. He manages all aspects of colorectal surgery including proctology and pelvic floor surgery, as well as management of general surgical conditions including hernias, gallstones and lipomas.

Background & Training

Rhys was raised and educated in Tasmania. He received his MBBS with first class honours from the University of Tasmania in 2007. His internship and residency were completed in NSW prior to being accepted into the surgical training program. He moved to Western Australia in 2010 to complete his general surgical training and was awarded his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in early 2015. Following completion of his general surgical training, Rhys was accepted into the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand post fellowship training program. This prestigious program is recognised internationally for the high quality of its training, and its application process is highly competitive. The program saw him complete two years of post-fellowship training in specialist colorectal surgery. The first year he spent at The Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney where he focused on laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer. His second year was spent at North Shore Hospital, Auckland. This is a high volume tertiary colorectal centre, and is the North Island's referral centre for recurrent and locally advanced rectal cancer, as well as a regional referral centre for pelvic floor conditions.

Rhys maintains his commitment to the public hospital system with clinical and teaching roles at Sir Charles Gairdner and Osborne Park Hospitals. He provides general surgical cover to King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women. He was previously a member of the Western Australian Board in General Surgery with responsibility for registrar training.
